Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust supporting African lion and large carnivore survey in the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area

Kampala, Uganda (August 19, 2022): Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT) is pleased to support a survey for large carnivores in the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area in Uganda, particularly for African lion, leopard and spotted hyena. The VSPT was established in 2009, as a non-profit organization that connects Volcanoes Safaris' Rwanda and Uganda luxury lodges to the neighboring communities and conservation activities. The VSPT which is funded by Volcanoes Safaris, as well as private donations by guests and other parties, will donate over $12,000 to the carnivore survey. Funds will be used for camera traps, fieldwork, and a Ugandan researcher to lead the work.

The survey will collect data over a 3-month period using remote camera traps and a network of field teams. VSPT will hold a training workshop for park rangers, VSPT field staff and local stakeholders at the Community and Conservation Centre at Kyambura Gorge Lodge led by Dr. Tutilo Mudumba, Dr. Arjun Gopalaswamy and Dr. Alexander Braczkowski, on carnivore monitoring techniques.

“We fully support this critical work surveying threatened species. Thank you to everyone taking part and especially Uganda Wildlife Authority for their sustained conservation work in a challenging environment” said Kevin James, Trustee of Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust.

Dr. Aleksander Braczkowski, said “The monitoring of large carnivores in Uganda is essential for future generations and there is no better way to do this than through a collaborative program led by Ugandan researchers, rangers, scientists and students
